Visit some of our personal favorites in and around Altavista.
The Altavista Area YMCA was founded in 1971 making the community of Altavista the smallest town in America with a YMCA. Today the YMCA encompasses almost three city blocks and over 65,000 square feet of facilities valued at over $5 million dollars. The physical complex consists of the Family Center built in 1972 and the Athletic Center constructed in 1994.
Avoca is the home place of Revolutionary Patriot Colonel Charles Lynch. The house is an excellent example of 19th Century American Queen Anne architecture. The property is listed on both the Virginia and National Registers of Historic Places. It was given to the Town of Altavista in the 1980s, and is operated by the non-profit Avoca Museum and Historical Society.
