The Altavista Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner is getting a complete makeover. The Chamber has hosted the event at Altavista Elementary School featuring a catered meal, numerous awards and a guest speaker. After following a similar format for many years, the Board of Directors decided now is a great time to mix things up and give this event a makeover.
The Chamber will host the event in the ballroom at Virginia Technical Institute on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 6pm. This year, the theme, “Denim & Diamonds” has been chosen. Guests are encouraged to pair their best denim with lots of sparkle and bling! Opting out of a sit down meal, the first portion of the evening will be more of a social occasion featuring food stations and high top tables to give people more opportunity for networking. The event will also have a photo booth, music, cash bar, and an auction which will benefit the Chamber’s Education Foundation. The second half of the evening will be focused on honoring award winners for Altavista’s Business of the Year, Cornerstone Award (formerly Citizen of the Year), Innovation in Education Award, and Teachers of the Year from Altavista Elementary School, Altavista Combined School, Faith Christian Academy and Hurt Elementary School. The Altavista Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to attend “Denim & Diamonds: Awards Gala & Auction”. Tickets are $30/person and will be available to purchase through Friday, January 12. For more information and to purchase tickets, please contact Altavista Chamber office, 434.369.6665. Tickets can also be purchased online, visit www.altavistachamber.com
Proceeds from the auction will benefit the Chamber Education Foundation to provide grants to area teachers, scholarships to local graduates, or workforce training.
The Town of Altavista is continuing the process of developing a Parks and Trails Master Plan. The town has partnered with Land Planning and Design Associates to develop master plans for English and Shreve Parks and create a Town-wide multi-use trail system plan. The process will involve an in-depth assessment of the Town of Altavista’s needs. An assessment of each park and the existing trails network has been completed. On November 14th the town held a public information meeting to solicit specific input from the public regarding the parks and trails system. The meeting was extremely well attended and over 75 citizens expressed their opinions on the parks. In addition, an on-line public survey was created for which 206 area residents responded. The information gathered from these two sessions has now been analyzed. Draft recommendations and master plans have been created and are to be presented for community feedback.
A meeting to hear community feedback on the recommendations and plans is scheduled for Tuesday, January 23, 2018. The public is invited to comment on the plans and recommendations for future improvements. The master plan will be incorporated into the town Capital Improvements Program (CIP) budget. Therefore, feedback on the direction is very important.
Your comments are appreciated, and we hope that you can attend the meeting: Park and Trails Master Plan Community Meeting #2, Tuesday January 23 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Town Council Chambers of the Altavista Town Hall, 510 7th Street. Areas of focus include master plan recommendations for parks, trails, and amenities/facilities. For more information, contact Mr. Daniel Witt, Assistant Town Manager at 434-369-5001.
