Avoca Museum Town Appreciation Day & Open House

  • 06 Apr 2019
  • 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
  • Avoca Museum, 1514 Main Street, Altavista

Avoca Museum in Altavista will be opening for the 2019 season on Saturday, April 6 with an Open House event. Admission that day is free to the public. The special event will take place from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and will be followed by a free lecture on local archaeology.

“We consider it our Town Appreciation Day,” Executive Director Michael Hudson stated. “The house will be open for folks to tour, and we will have refreshments, living history demonstrations, and special exhibits. Families with children will be able to play our Operation Hourglass game.

At 3:00 pm, following the open house, there will be a special presentation by Dr. Michael Johnson on archaeological digs he has conducted in this area. Johnson, a former Virginia state archaeologist of the year, has had a great deal of involvement with the Smithsonian, Hudson noted.

“He will be giving a fascinating lecture on archaeological digs he’s done right here in this area and what they’ve taught about the ancient Paleo-Indians that used to inhabit this land,” Hudson explained. “If anyone has any interest in Native American history and ancient artifacts, they will not want to miss this presentation, which is likewise free.”
